Goodbye To Greenbank

by: Madison Hall

“I created this illustration in response to Erin’s story about her high school best friend moving west on an outfitted school bus. I really wanted to recreate the sense of nostalgia in the song that speaks to what it feels like to be both left and to be leaving. Pictured here is the leaving with all memories in tow flown in by birds. I chose the song because it spoke to where I feel I am also at in life watching my friends settle into their lives around me. It can be hard sensing these paths that diverge from you but in the end I think many friendships are cyclical in their push and pull and can withstand and I believe Goodbye to Greenbank is testament to that. Also, originally I wanted to have the two friends talking on their phones but found out that Greenbank is in the National Quiet Zone where cell signal is nonexistent and wifi banned for the sake of telescopic research. This may be the real testament to the strength of friendship and an excuse to draw more people using paper maps.”

About the artist:

Madison Hall is a Richmond, VA based illustrator and printmaker. Her illustrations are often inspired by what can be found on the back roads of the south-east and outdoor exploration. She favors any medium that lends itself to tactility and historic processes such as letterpress and screen printing and creates posters, product designs, logos and most things in between. COVID-19 has led to a lot of artists with cancelled projects and I am grateful that this collaboration has helped keep me focused. I hope everyone is keeping themselves safe as a priority and is looking forward to more collaboration in the future.
